Physical therapy

Physical therapy is a clinical approach to helping you regain functional capacity after injury, and get back to the life you were meant to live. Each Spear therapist is equipped with the skills, tools and expertise to not only promote injury healing and pain reduction, but to identify other underlying physical impairments—including weakness, flexibility and joint stiffness—that might require a more specialized path to recovery. This approach goes well beyond standard PT care, and will get you moving and performing more optimally while also preventing future injuries.

Frequently asked questions about Physical therapy

What is physical therapy?
Physical therapy has grown and evolved in the last century to become an indispensable part of rehabilitation. It is a clinical approach that brings together dedicated and highly motivated health care professionals or physical therapists who help improve mobility after injury by working to reduce pain, increase your range of motion, strength, and balance, and, most importantly, give you your independence back. A physical therapist will also look at underlying impairments such as balance problems, muscle weakness, and reduced flexibility to help develop special exercises and treatment plans to get you on the right path to recovery.
How does Spear physical therapy work?
When you receive PT treatment at Spear, you can expect to be taken through an individualized program that addresses your unique needs and goals. On your first day, your physical therapist will take time listening, observing, and examining to generate a more complete picture of your injury and symptoms. This session will conclude with an explanation of your treatment plan, what to expect going forward with physical therapy, and instructions for any exercises you can begin performing at home. From this point on, your treatment should be thought of as a partnership between you and your therapist.
Costs of physical therapy services
Services offered in a typical PT session can all be billed through insurance. Certain specialized treatments (golf swing analysis, transitional care/personal training, etc.) are not covered by insurance, and therefore billed at self-pay rates.
What kind of physical therapy treatments are provided at Spear?
At Spear Physical Therapy, our therapists treat different orthopedic and neuromuscular conditions and diseases ranging from post-concussion rehabilitation to joint replacement, pelvic floor dysfunction, and balance disorders. Our treatment plans include modalities and techniques that use soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, electrical stimulation, stretching, therapeutic exercises, heat therapy, and cold therapy.
When is physical therapy recommended?
If you are dealing with pain or an injury that’s affecting your ability to carry out your daily activities and exercise normally, or if you’re dealing with other physical function limitations, you could benefit from physical therapy. As a non-invasive approach to pain reduction, it can be your first line of defense to help manage symptoms before resorting to surgery.
What does a physical therapy treatment involve?
During your first visit, your physical therapist will spend time understanding your medical history to get a complete picture of your symptoms and issues. The session will end with a personalized treatment plan, a timeline of how your treatment will progress, and exercises and instructions you need to continue at home. When you come in for your treatment, we ask you to check in 15 minutes before your appointment wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and a pair of rubber-soled sneakers. Carry all your verification, including your insurance coverage, physician’s prescription, list of medications, and imaging (MRIs, X-rays).
What should you expect at your first physical therapy visit?
During your first visit, the therapist will review when you began feeling pain, how the injury occurred, your general health, any past surgeries, and your goals. Your therapist will then conduct an initial evaluation to identify any postural faults and musculoskeletal imbalances, including tests for muscle length and strength, joint mobility, and soft tissue integrity. Following the evaluation, a personalized treatment plan will be developed for your specific needs and goals. Additionally, an at-home exercise program with specific exercises to support the recovery process will be created. Your physical therapist will explain each exercise, ensuring you understand the proper technique.
