Lymphedema therapy

Who can benefit from lymphedema therapy?

Lymphedema occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged, such as after the removal of the lymph nodes. This can cause fluid to build up in the affected area and can result in swelling. Treatment is necessary to prevent additional inflammation of the area and reduce the risk of infection.

Lymphedema therapy can treat several conditions, such as:

  • Cancer related lymphedema
  • Post-surgical lymphedema
  • Venous edema
  • Cardiac edema
  • Primary lymphedema
  • Postpartum edema
  • Pre-partum edema

How does lymphedema therapy treatment work?

A Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) will perform a thorough evaluation, including medical history, discussion of current condition, and an assessment of ROM, strength, sensation, circumferential measurements, and current compression garments. Your therapist will then design a comprehensive, individualized treatment program based on the findings of the evaluation and your personal goals.

Programs may include:

  • Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)
  • Compression bandaging
  • Lymphedema-safe exercise program
  • Patient education
  • Compression garment fitting
